Feustel, Mayfield: The DGSA: Unmet Information Security Challenges for Operating System Designers

This paper describes important aspects of the Department of Defense (DoD) Goal Security Architecture (DGSA). This architecture provides a framework for secure information access, processing, and distribution. Different from former approaches, the DoD acknowledges the importance of open systems. Even for the DoD, it is not possible any more to rely only on systems that are made according to their own requirements. Instead, the DGSA recommends to use public standards and implementations of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Internet Protocol Security Drafts to deal with public networks, encryption, etc.
